Lead Mechanical Engineering
Blykalla is scaling quickly in order to industrialize our small modular reactor (SMR) concept. If you are passionate about nuclear technology and want to make a significant impact, join us!
Are you an experienced mechanical engineer ready to take ownership of technical development in nuclear technology? Do you have expertise in steel construction and Pressure Vessel Directive (PED) compliance? Join Blykalla, Sweden’s leader in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as our Lead Mechanical Engineer and play a key role in advancing the future of energy.
What we do at Blykalla
At Blykalla, we’re transforming the future of nuclear power by developing innovative Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Our mission is to create a new generation of nuclear energy systems that are safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly. As Sweden’s only developer of SMRs, we’re at the forefront of a groundbreaking industry.
What you’ll get to do
As a Lead Mechanical Engineer, you will play a critical role in overseeing the technical aspects of projects from initiation to completion, acting as both a technical expert and a project leader. You will be a key contributor to the design, analysis, and development of mechanical systems for Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Your expertise in steel construction and adherence to standards like the Pressure Vessel Directive (PED) will be essential to the success and safety of our technology.
Key responsibilities include:
Define and guide the mechanical scope of projects, ensuring technical alignment with objectives.
Lead the development and optimization of mechanical designs, particularly for steel constructions and pressure vessel components.
Develop engineering schedules, milestones, and deliverables.
Perform 3D CAD modeling, FEM analyses, and technical drawings to validate designs and support manufacturing.
Ensure compliance with industry standards, including the Pressure Vessel Directive (PED), safety regulations, and quality requirements.
Coordinate with cross-functional teams (R&D, procurement, manufacturing) to deliver integrated solutions.
Act as a mentor and technical resource, supporting team members and resolving complex engineering challenges.
Who you are
You will be part of a highly skilled team with a can-do attitude. We are looking for a highly skilled and proactive mechanical engineer with proven technical expertise, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail. Success in this role will be supported by the following qualifications:
Your Qualifications:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
9+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a focus on steel construction and FEM analysis.
Hands-on experience with Pressure Vessel Directive (PED) or similar regulatory standards.
Proficiency in 3D CAD tools. Mechanical simulation software (e.g., FEM analysis) is a plus.
Strong ability to define and manage technical project scopes.
Excellent communication skills, with experience collaborating across multidisciplinary teams.
Fluent in English, spoken and written
Fluency in Swedish is a plus

About Blykalla
Blykalla AB was founded in 2013 by Janne Wallenius, Peter Szakalos, and Jesper Ejenstam as a spin-off from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, where Janne Wallenius has carried out research on design and safety analysis on lead-cooled reactor systems since 1996.
The research brought together insights from fast reactor design, transient analysis, corrosion and materials science, nuclear fuel development, lead coolant chemistry, radiation damage, severe accident analysis, nuclear construction, and operation of nuclear power plants to create a unique reactor design that provides safe and sustainable baseload energy.
Our lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs) will be used for electricity, heating, and industrial applications such as production of hydrogen, HVO, syngas, and biochar. By targeting otherwise hard-to-abate sectors we contribute to decarbonization throughout the industrial value chain.
