Manager – Mechanical Engineering
Blykalla is scaling quickly in order to industrialize our small modular reactor (SMR) concept. If you are passionate about nuclear technology and want to make a significant impact, join us!
Are you an experienced engineering leader with a passion for building high-performing teams capable of tackling some of the most complex engineering challenges? Do you thrive in a fast-paced startup environment where your leadership can shape the future? Join Blykalla, Sweden’s leader in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as Manager for Mechanical and Simulation Engineering.
What we do at Blykalla
At Blykalla, we’re transforming the future of nuclear power by developing groundbreaking Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Our mission is to deliver a new generation of nuclear energy systems that are safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly. As Sweden’s only developer of SMRs, we are at the forefront of building Europe’s first advanced SMR—a transformative project requiring unmatched innovation and collaboration.
What you’ll get to do
This is not a simple task. As Manager of Mechanical Engineering, you will play a central role in building and leading a world-class in-house team of skilled engineers and experts. This team will manage a large network of suppliers and strategic partners, all working together to execute the development and construction of a nuclear power plant.
Your leadership will be pivotal in ensuring technical excellence across mechanical design, structural engineering, and CFD simulations. You will manage not just internal teams but also coordinate with an ecosystem of suppliers and collaborators to achieve the ambitious goal of delivering Europe’s first advanced SMR.
In this role, you will:
- Build, mentor, and lead a team of highly skilled engineers specializing in mechanical engineering and simulations (including structural engineering and CFD).
- Plan and manage the execution of highly complex projects, ensuring the team delivers high-quality designs and analyses to meet stringent safety and performance standards.
- Oversee the integration of mechanical and simulation solutions into the broader SMR development process, ensuring alignment with system-wide requirements.
- Collaborate with a vast network of suppliers and partners to create a robust ecosystem capable of executing a project of this magnitude.
- Promote a culture of innovation, safety, quality, and continuous improvement across engineering practices.
- Communicate effectively with senior leadership and stakeholders, providing insights, updates, and solutions to drive progress.
Who you are
This role is for someone who thrives on complexity and is motivated by the opportunity to build something unprecedented. We believe you bring:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience in mechanical design, structural engineering, or fluid dynamics, ideally in the nuclear, energy, or high-tech sectors.
- Several years of proven experience as a manager, with a strong track record in recruiting, managing, and developing high-performing engineering teams.
- Expertise in FEM, CFD, and 3D CAD tools, with an excellent understanding of industry standards and safety protocols.
- A collaborative mindset, capable of managing partnerships with a large network of suppliers and stakeholders.
- Exceptional communication skills and the ability to inspire and guide teams through ambitious and complex goals.
- A solution-oriented, innovative approach to problem-solving, with a passion for sustainable engineering.
- Fluency in English (spoken and written). Swedish is a plus.

About Blykalla
Blykalla AB was founded in 2013 by Janne Wallenius, Peter Szakalos, and Jesper Ejenstam as a spin-off from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, where Janne Wallenius has carried out research on design and safety analysis on lead-cooled reactor systems since 1996.
The research brought together insights from fast reactor design, transient analysis, corrosion and materials science, nuclear fuel development, lead coolant chemistry, radiation damage, severe accident analysis, nuclear construction, and operation of nuclear power plants to create a unique reactor design that provides safe and sustainable baseload energy.
Our lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs) will be used for electricity, heating, and industrial applications such as production of hydrogen, HVO, syngas, and biochar. By targeting otherwise hard-to-abate sectors we contribute to decarbonization throughout the industrial value chain.
