What we do at Blykalla
At Blykalla, we’re transforming the future of nuclear power by developing innovative Advanced Reactors. Our mission is to create a new generation of nuclear energy systems that are safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly. As Sweden’s only developer of SMRs, we’re at the forefront of a groundbreaking industry.
What you’ll get to do
As a senior nuclear safety engineer responsible for the production of SAR documentation, you will play a pivotal role in the development of the First Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (FPSAR) for SEALER reactors. This is a high-impact position where your expertise will directly contribute to Blykalla’s mission to secure regulatory approvals and achieve critical project milestones. You will lead and manage the creation of complex technical documentation such as safety analysis and work closely with our design team, ensuring full compliance with regulatory requirements and adherence to global best practices in nuclear safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the development, review, and delivery of the First Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (FPSAR) for SEALER reactors.
- Manage cross-functional inputs from the engineering, materials, and safety teams to produce high-quality, cohesive documentation.
- Collaborate with regulatory authorities, particularly the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM), to ensure compliance with national and international standards.
- Guide and mentor junior nuclear safety engineers in SAR writing, fostering skill development and ensuring consistency in documentation.
- Conduct detailed analysis of reactor safety functions, accident scenarios, and mitigation strategies to document the safety case effectively.
- Stay abreast of advancements in nuclear safety regulations, materials, and reactor technologies, integrating relevant updates into the SAR.
- Participate in internal and external audits of safety documentation, ensuring accuracy and regulatory alignment.
Who you are
You will be part of a highly skilled team with a can-do attitude. We value Team chemistry and strive to create a workplace that you enjoy coming to. There are however a few things that we think will help you to succeed in this role, these are:
- Master’s or Ph.D. in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, or a closely related field.
- At least 8-10 years in safety analysis, regulatory compliance, or technical documentation for nuclear reactors or similar high-stakes engineering projects.
- Demonstrated expertise in preparing safety analysis documentation (e.g., PSARs or FSAR) for advanced reactors or nuclear facilities.
- Deep knowledge of nuclear safety principles, regulatory frameworks (e.g., SSMFS, NRC, IAEA standards), and defense-in-depth concepts.
- Familiarity with reactor simulation and safety analysis tools (e.g., RELAP5, TRACE, ANSYS, or equivalent).
- Strong leadership skills, with a track record of coordinating complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
- Exceptional written communication skills and an ability to distill complex technical concepts into clear, regulatory-compliant documents.
- Fluency in the Swedish language, both in speech and writing
- Fluent in the English language, both in speech and writing

About Blykalla
Blykalla AB was founded in 2013 by Janne Wallenius, Peter Szakalos, and Jesper Ejenstam as a spin-off from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, where Janne Wallenius has carried out research on design and safety analysis on lead-cooled reactor systems since 1996.
The research brought together insights from fast reactor design, transient analysis, corrosion and materials science, nuclear fuel development, lead coolant chemistry, radiation damage, severe accident analysis, nuclear construction, and operation of nuclear power plants to create a unique reactor design that provides safe and sustainable baseload energy.
Our lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs) will be used for electricity, heating, and industrial applications such as production of hydrogen, HVO, syngas, and biochar. By targeting otherwise hard-to-abate sectors we contribute to decarbonization throughout the industrial value chain.
