Junior Nuclear Safety Engineer
Blykalla is scaling quickly in order to industrialize our small modular reactor (SMR) concept. If you are passionate about nuclear technology and want to make a significant impact, join us!
Are you passionate about nuclear safety and eager to kick-start your career in an innovative industry? Do you have a knack for technical writing and a desire to learn from experienced engineers? Join Blykalla, Sweden’s leader in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as a Junior Nuclear Safety Engineer, and contribute to shaping the future of sustainable energy.
What we do at Blykalla
At Blykalla, we’re transforming the future of nuclear power by developing innovative Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Our mission is to create a new generation of nuclear energy systems that are safer, more efficient, and environmentally friendly. As Sweden’s only developer of SMRs, we’re at the forefront of a groundbreaking industry.
What you’ll get to do
As a Junior nuclear safety engineer for SAR document production, you will play a vital role in preparing the First Preliminary Safety Analysis Report (FPSAR) for Blykalla’s SEALER reactors. This document is a cornerstone of the licensing process, ensuring our reactors meet the stringent safety standards set by regulatory authorities. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about nuclear safety and eager to grow in a supportive, innovative environment. You will be working closely with more experienced Safety engineers for SAR production and supporting our design team.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in drafting, editing, and organizing sections of the FPSAR, including reactor design, safety systems, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Review safety-related documentation and other design documentation.
- Interpretation of authority requirements from the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) and international nuclear safety requirements and standards.
- Support and produce documentation for safety analyses, accident scenarios, and operational parameters for our SEALER reactors.
- Stay updated on regulatory changes and integrate them into Blykalla documentation.
Who you are
You will be part of a highly skilled team with a can-do attitude. We value Team chemistry and strive to create a workplace that you enjoy coming to. There are however a few things that we think will help you to succeed in this role, these are:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in nuclear engineering, physics, or a related field.
- Strong written communication skills, preferably with some technical writing experience.
- Basic understanding of nuclear safety principles, reactor operations, or licensing processes is a plus.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and eager to learn.
- Fluent in the English language, both in speech and writing
- Fluency in the Swedish language, both in speech and writing
Meritorious skills:
- Experience from energy companies, research institutions, or nuclear-focused organizations, with tasks that involve compiling, analyzing, or presenting technical data.
- Experience writing or contributing to detailed technical documents such as research papers, design reports, or engineering summaries.
- Familiarity with regulatory or standards-based documentation (SAR), even if indirectly (e.g., coursework requiring structured report writing).

About Blykalla
Blykalla AB was founded in 2013 by Janne Wallenius, Peter Szakalos, and Jesper Ejenstam as a spin-off from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, where Janne Wallenius has carried out research on design and safety analysis on lead-cooled reactor systems since 1996.
The research brought together insights from fast reactor design, transient analysis, corrosion and materials science, nuclear fuel development, lead coolant chemistry, radiation damage, severe accident analysis, nuclear construction, and operation of nuclear power plants to create a unique reactor design that provides safe and sustainable baseload energy.
Our lead-cooled fast reactors (LFRs) will be used for electricity, heating, and industrial applications such as production of hydrogen, HVO, syngas, and biochar. By targeting otherwise hard-to-abate sectors we contribute to decarbonization throughout the industrial value chain.
