Nuclear Waste Manager
Blykalla is scaling quickly in order to industrialize our small modular reactor (SMR) concept. If you are passionate about nuclear technology and want to make a significant impact, join us!
Are you a systems thinker with a passion for solving complex nuclear backend challenges? We’re looking for a Nuclear Waste Manager to lead Blykalla’s strategy and delivery for waste and spent fuel management. Join us as we bring Sweden’s first small modular reactor to life—and shape how we manage its legacy with technical, regulatory, and economic foresight.
What we do at Blykalla
Blykalla is a Swedish deep-tech company at the forefront of the nuclear industry, pioneering the development of advanced small modular reactors that provide clean, safe, and reliable energy. Thanks to lead-cooling, we achieve high safety in a very compact format, allowing for a simple and cost-effective design that can be mass-produced. Our unique reactor design will provide safe and green baseload energy that perfectly complements solar and wind power.
What you’ll get to do
You’ll be responsible for defining, coordinating, and delivering Blykalla’s approach to spent fuel and radioactive waste management - spanning technical feasibility, regulatory engagement, and long-term funding models. This is a unique opportunity to build up a core function in a first-of-a-kind SMR company.
- Lead Blykalla’s internal program on waste and spent fuel strategy, including technical direction, program delivery, and regulatory roadmap
- Coordinate feasibility studies on direct disposal, pre-treatment, or reprocessing of uranium nitride fuel
- Define treatment, classification, and disposal strategies for low-, intermediate-, and high-level waste
- Develop methodologies to minimize waste volumes through design choices, process optimization, and coolant purification
- Interface with Swedish and international partners, as well as national regulators
- Oversee the development of cost projections and funding mechanisms for back-end liabilities
- Contribute to the broader deployment strategy for Blykalla’s SMRs, ensuring backend readiness aligns with reactor timelines
Where this role can take you
This is a foundational position. As Blykalla moves toward demonstration and commercial deployment, you can expect to have the opportunity to:
- Build and lead a cross-functional waste and spent fuel team
- Shape national-level conversations around backend solutions for advanced reactors
- Represent Blykalla in licensing processes, strategic partnerships, and industry working groups
- Define new technical standards for lead-cooled reactor waste and UN fuel disposition
You’ll be instrumental in shaping how a new generation of nuclear power manages its legacy responsibly and sustainably.
Who you are
You’re a strategic doer - comfortable working across technical, regulatory, and organizational boundaries. You understand that nuclear waste is not just a technical challenge but also a matter of public trust and long-term accountability. You communicate clearly, plan proactively, and keep progress moving even when the answers aren’t all there yet. You are confident presenting in high-profile settings - whether at regulatory meetings, partner briefings, or expert workshops - and can translate complexity into clarity. You’re curious, pragmatic, and motivated by impact - ready to help build something that lasts.
Qualifications
- Background in nuclear engineering, nuclear chemistry, waste management, or a related technical field
- Experience with radioactive waste and/or spent fuel management—ideally including advanced fuels or non-standard reactor systems
- Prior experience in a managerial or informal leadership role (e.g., project lead, task coordination, or external interface)
- Strong coordination and communication skills—comfortable presenting to senior stakeholders and cross-functional audiences
- Familiarity with Swedish nuclear regulatory frameworks (e.g., SSM, SKB) and international guidance (e.g., IAEA, WENRA, OECD NEA)
- Fluent in Swedish and English
- Eligible to work with nuclear materials and in nuclear organizations in Sweden
The following will be considered a plus:
- Exposure to waste transport regulations and infrastructure (e.g., packaging, logistics, acceptance criteria)
- Experience with cost modeling, funding mechanisms, or backend liability planning
Location
The position is based in Stockholm and includes regular travel to project sites and partner facilities.

About Blykalla
Blykalla is Sweden's only SMR vendor, commercializing lead-cooled fast reactors for industrial use. Based on 20+ years of research, their SEALER technology is a compact 55 MWe unit designed to offer a safe, efficient, and scalable power solution. With a strong foundation within Sweden, Blykalla is well positioned to deliver Europe's first advanced SMR, providing reliable and sustainable baseload energy to power AI and clean industries.
Backed by partners such as Uniper, ABB, KSB, Höganäs, and the Royal Institute of Technology, Blykalla has secured close to EUR 50 million in funding, including a SEK 99 million grant from the Swedish Energy Agency and a EUR 17 million investment from the EU. The company plans to complete its first SEALER reactor by 2030 and begin serial production in the 2030s. By 2050, their technology could generate up to 500 TWh of clean electricity annually, cutting global CO₂ emissions by 0.5 gigatons each year.
