Blykalla is developing the next generation of nuclear technology with our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) based on innovative fuel, materials, and reactor designs. As Sweden’s only SMR developer, we are on a mission to decarbonize industries and enable safe, scalable, and sustainable energy solutions. Our technology uses uranium nitride fuel and lead coolant, creating novel challenges and opportunities for the fuel cycle and supporting systems.
What you’ll get to do
We are seeking a dynamic Materials Engineer to join our Materials team. This role is pivotal in advancing our materials knowhow, focusing on the development, qualification, and industrialization of new materials crucial for our SMR technology.
Key Responsibilities:
Materials Expertise and Advancement: Drive the transition of new materials from concept to industry, navigating challenges from lab to application. Harness deep knowledge in alloying concepts, steel production processes, material processes such as welding, to guide material qualification and industrialization.
Strategic Qualification Planning and Execution: You will spearhead the strategic planning and meticulous execution of technical material qualifications in collaboration with our suppliers and partners. Your leadership in this area will ensure that our material development efforts are not only innovative but also compliant and tailored to meet the exacting demands of our projects.
Regulatory Compliance: Apply an in-depth understanding of nuclear industry regulations to the material qualification process, ensuring compliance and translating regulatory requirements into actionable company-specific steps.
Collaborative Cost Management: Work closely with the supply Chain team to maintain a Design-to-Cost approach throughout development and industrialization, balancing cost efficiency and quality assurance.
Stakeholder Engagement: Provide regular updates to the Team Manager and other projects you are involved in, on progress, challenges, and any issues, ensuring transparent communication and stakeholder involvement.
Who you are
You will be part of a highly skilled team with a can-do attitude. We value personal chemistry and strive to create a workplace where you enjoy coming to. There are however a few things that we think will help in order for you to succeed in this role, these are:
Functional Experience: Proven track record in technical project management, material engineering, or production quality, preferably within highly regulated industries such as nuclear, automotive, aviation, or space. Experience within the steel industry preferably in product development and industrialization.
Qualifications: Engineering degree with specialization relevant to material science. Background in advanced steel alloys, corrosion, testing, welding and additive manufacturing. Experience in the steel industry working closely with suppliers on material development and a practical understanding of material qualification processes.
Fluent in Swedish and English, spoken and written.
Location
This position is for our office in Stockholm. We do not offer any relocation support for this role.

About Blykalla
Blykalla is Sweden's only SMR vendor, commercializing lead-cooled fast reactors for industrial use. Based on 20+ years of research, their SEALER technology is a compact 55 MWe unit designed to offer a safe, efficient, and scalable power solution. With a strong foundation within Sweden, Blykalla is well positioned to deliver Europe's first advanced SMR, providing reliable and sustainable baseload energy to power AI and clean industries.
Backed by partners such as Uniper, ABB, KSB, Höganäs, and the Royal Institute of Technology, Blykalla has secured close to EUR 50 million in funding, including a SEK 99 million grant from the Swedish Energy Agency and a EUR 17 million investment from the EU. The company plans to complete its first SEALER reactor by 2030 and begin serial production in the 2030s. By 2050, their technology could generate up to 500 TWh of clean electricity annually, cutting global CO₂ emissions by 0.5 gigatons each year.
